  • Greeters and Sidespersons

Visitors
There are crosses, in a box by the hymn books, which are for giving to anyone visiting St. Andrew's, and are for them to keep. They have a pin in the back so that the person can put them on. Would the sidespeople and greeters please hand them out. Also anyone in the congregation seeing anyone wearing them, please make them welcome.

Needed
Greeters for all three services but especially the 11 am service. This is a really good way to become familiar with the members of the parish. There is only a commitment to be at the church a little ahead of the service in order to welcome people to the parish.  If you feel like becoming involved in this way, please contact Lois McElheran at 656-1992 or the church office at 656-5322.

  • Book Room

Book Room (Store)
Have you any up-to-date good paper backs that you can donate to the book room? We are in need of them! The money from the book room goes towards purchasing books needed in the parish, such as the new Praise Books. Please come and browse. The book room is open Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until after the last service, and any day in the week through the office (9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.).

On Saturday mornings, weather permitting, we will be putting out books on a table outside; the books will be on sale at a very good price. We will still be open for books at our normal price of $1.00 per book. We have an excellent selection. All money raise goes towards purchasing necessary books and videos for the parish as well as for outreach.

THE LABYRINTH
Labyrinths are usually in the form of a circle with a meandering but purposeful path, from the edge to the centre and back out again, large enough to be walked into. Each has only one path, and once we make the choice to enter it, the path becomes a metaphor for our journey through life, sending us to the centre of the labyrinth and
then back out to the edge on the same path. The labyrinth is a spiritual tool meant to awaken us to the deep rhythm that unites us to ourselves and to the Light that calls from within. In surrendering to the winding path, the soul finds healing and wholeness.

11:00 Service
Do you have a favourite Hymn? John White would like to included it in the 11:00 music. Please jot down the hymn number, first line of words and whether it is from the Hymn Book or New Common Praise Book. Leave your message with the sidesperson.

  • Abbeyfield House, Sidney B.C.

Abbeyfield House
A non-profit residence for lower income, independent-living seniors has a vacancy in this family-like home within 3 blocks of Beacon Avenue. A bed-sitting room and bath are provided along with all meals and regular in-house entertainment. Must be 75 years or older. Please call Connie at 656-4118 for more information and a tour of the house. Names are also now being accepted on the waiting list.

The 20th Anniversary of the First Abbeyfield House In North America

On December 4, 1984, a meeting was held at St. Andrew's Church concerning the need for sheltered housing for seniors caught between independence and dependence. A Board of Directors was elected.

Rebecca Vermeer became President, Geoff Giles, Vice President, Elizabeth Logan, Secretary and John Moran Treasurer. The Directors were Rev. David Fuller, Ken Gray and Bernice Lambert. The dream was launched. At a second meeting in January 1985, all sorts of topics were addressed: criteria for admission, number of residents, purchase of property, fund raising, potential government funding.

At a meeting on April 1, 1986, it was decided to affiliate with Abbeyfield Houses Society of Canada, the new "arm" of Abbeyfield, and they now could call themselves a society. This opened new doors for funding. In addition to a stream of donations from all sorts of individuals, $10,000 came from the Anglican Foundation, another $10,000 from the provincial lottery and $35,000 from the Ministry of Health for the House Parent's accommodation.

Margaret Cream, who became Secretary and who had typed miles of "stuff' for the cause, remembered that January 11, 1987 was a clear, cool Sunday when a good crowd gathered after the morning service to watch the officials with silver shovels break the ground. The dream was becoming a reality.

In May, 1987, the nine residents began to move in. By mid-June, all were happily settled and eating well; six ladies and three gentlemen, all in their 80's except for the "baby", who was only 69.

The official opening ceremony was held in September with Bishop Shepherd in attendance for the official ribbon cutting and the blessing of each room in the house. The first Abbeyfield House in North America was now open.

It was a monumental achievement for all.

ANDY'S ANGELS
(Helping grandmothers in Africa)

This is a ministry being formed to raise awareness of and support for grandmothers in Africa who are struggling to care for their dying children and to feed, clothe and educate the grand-children already orphaned by AIDS.
There will be an official presentation in September about this ministry. However, the need is pressing and one way we can get started helping is by taking the little film cassettes at the back of the church and filling them, during the summer, with our Spare "loonies" and / or "toonies". They will be collected in September or October. All proceeds will be donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.

For more information call Pat Tucker at 656·4919.

Contributions by Direct Deposit

Envelope Offering
The weekly envelope offering system is another method of contributing which enables the parishioners to obtain a tax benefit.  In order to facilitate the process, please take note of the following:

1.  Do not fold notes or most cheques. The envelopes are designed to accommodate them.

2.   Designate the amount contained on the front of the envelope for specific purpose.

3.  Ensure cheques are dated, signed and figures and words agree.

4.  If you are 'catching up' on missed weeks, use the latest envelope only and state the weeks included. Other envelopes can be discarded.

5.  If at all possible, do not use coins.

6.  If going away, please prepay your envelope contributions. The church keeps going during your absence.

7.   Contact the Envelope Secretary, Ruth Simpson, 652-1109, if you require envelopes.

The Discretionary Fund
This fund is always in need of your financial gifts as the requests on this fund are great. While the demands are heaviest in November and December, before the Christmas season, there are always requests for back-to-school supplies in September, and in the summer months, there are transients dropping by the church office for bus, ferry and food needs.

In the past months, the Rector has had requests for Home Care assistance, Respite Care help, medication supplies (not covered),  referrals, counselling child care for sick mother, and Respite Care costs.   All of these cost money, which is given in love by individuals and groups within the Church.

Your continued support is appreciated, with special thanks for recent donations from Third Mile Home Group, and Morning Group, and without their help and yours, this fund could not provide for those in need or in a time of emergency. Your gifts could be included in your weekly offering envelopes, indicating Discretionary Fund.

Healing and Reconciliation Fund

At the Synod held in February a motion was passed that apportioned the costs of Residential School Agreement in proportion to each parish's 2003 assessment. St. Andrew's fair share is set at $6,300 per year for five years.  We have 250 active envelope users and if each one increased giving by 50¢ per week we could meet this challenge.

The diocese has already begun paying toward the fund. We have borrowed from the "Rectory Fund" to assist the Diocese. The
money we raise will be used to repay the Rectory Fund.

You can participate in this important endeavour by:
1.  Increasing your contributions by 50¢ per week over the next 5 years;
2.  A lump sum donation;
3.  Being  generous at Christmas  (the Christmas special offering will be applied to this fund until it is fully paid).
