Artist Profile
February, 2003.

Derek Kerslake Artist casting bronze spikes.

Raised in Richmond Hill, Ontario, I joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a technical engineering apprentice at age 16. In 1966 I left the navy and moved to Calgary , was married 1969 and resided in Edmonton and Calgary until eventually settling in Victoria, British Columbia. My art education has been and continues to be, self directed.*

In 1986 I built a bronze foundry for bronze medals and maquettes. (Experiences shared on www.bronzesite.com in the Studio.) Industrial, experience includes PVC extrusion, polyester, epoxy, glass and carbon fibre laminates, joinery and machining.

Expertise acquired over 35 years of employment in the marine and construction industries has proven very useful. In computerization, Windows and Macintosh systems, spreadsheet design for budget predictions and statistical analysis, World Wide Web design and publication, have all played a role in helping to develop my work and expose it to an online global community.

*Acknowledgements

The list of those who have contributed to my education through their works and writing are too many to mention but I must acknowledge with special gratitude the following: Edouard Lanteri, Dr. Paul Richer, essayists Wendy Steiner and Rosalind Krauss and the many editors and writers of articles, essays and catalogues on artists, such as, Rodin, Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brancusi, Joseph Beuys, Naum Gabo, Miro, Henry Moore.

Theories about art and time postulated by Lucio Fontana and Marcel Duchamp were important to my conception of random-axial sculpture (multi-position sculpture) and further ideas about time/mass relationships. Stephen Hawking's, "A Brief History of Time", broadened my ideas initiated by Fontana and Duchamp regarding theory of time and mass. Also, the very early works of Alberto Giacometti lead me to some of Giacometti's thoughts on time and cognition of reality within a time line.

Philosophical theories of Michel Foucault, archetypal theories of Carl Jung and psychological implications of art theorized by Rudolf Arnheim and others have added confidence my personal interpretation of sculpture and it's relationship to others.
