Multi-position Sculpture: (Henry Moore) - A precursor to Random Axial Sculpture.
"Sculpture...which could be seen in at least three positions and be effective in all of them",
(Hedgecoe and Moore. Henry Moore, 501).Random Axial Sculpture: (Multi-positional sculpture by Derek Kerslake).
Sculpture designed to be orientated by the participant without instructions from the artist, (Kerslake).
The following illustrations are of a single sculpture. The top row shows "Resucitar" on a flat surface, photographed three times, revolved in the direction indicated by red arrows. Following the first three photos (orientation A), the work is tipped forward onto a new "bottom" and photographed again as it is revolved in the second orientation,(B). The art work will rest on a flat surface in 8 orientations of equal significance. In each orientation, the work may be revolved about an imaginary axis. Because the artist has no way of knowing what axis the gallery or participants will chose, from the sculptor's point of view, the axis must be considered random. In other words, the art work must be designed to have consistent aesthetic value from every conceivable point of view.
In larger sculptures, Kerslake follows the theme of random axes further by placing the art work in fluid mediums and on surfaces which are not always flat or hard. Selected photographs of random axial sculptures in various situations, called "Movable Monument Projects" by Kerslake, are posted on the internet. Movable Monument Projects
