- No flies on Taxman!
This year's program contains a dozen hopefully seamless upgrades (always working for you baby!). For fun, if you get tired of doing your taxes, there's a new Sudoku form to play with.
- Tax changes galore!
Thank the Conservatives for a last-minute tax rules revamp that should guarantee plenty of refunds (cunningly timed for a Spring election!). Be sure to read CRA's guide for all the new changes.
- Quebec gets a new Schedule 10!
Quebec now has a parental insurance plan which on the surface looks like kindhearted government altruism aimed at young families, but down deep I fear it's a scheme to breed more Quebecers! Isn't it ironic that, as the Earth groans under the weight of 6 billion humans, there's a shortage of Quebecers?
Bugs and Problems:
Version 1.0 had yet to see the provincial foreign tax credit form. Version 1.1 cured that.
Unfortuately it did not cure that fact that if you are claiming the Refundable Medical Supplement, all versions before 1.2 think that you only need employment income of $2,857 but you actually need 62 dollars more. If your employment income for Line 452 is between $2,856 and $2,919 and you ask the program to calculate your Medical Supplement, it may give you a refund you don't deserve. Upgrade Version 1.2 cures this problem.
Version 1.3 (March 25/2007) is not a necessary upgrade, but it's full of little improvements. Taxman has heeded your suggestions and, being a perfectionist, wants to make sure that you're playing with nothing but the best — remember, I'm always working for you.
Notes:
- If you receive a T4A from a pension and if in Box 28 there is an amount representing medical premiums paid on your behalf, enter the Box 28 amount on Line 104 of the tax return and not on Line 130. On Line 104 the amount adds to your RRSP deduction limit and lets you deduct the first $250 on Line 363 ($38 in your pocket!).
- The PPIP columns in the T4 section of the Worksheet are only filled in if you are a resident of Quebec. Any non-Quebec resident with PPIP premiums adds them to the EI premiums already on Line 312 (i.e. enters the PPIP premiums in the EI column).
