Welcome!
Wood Cubes & Cardboard is the personal site of Greg Aleknevicus. For the most part it's used to collect various boardgame-related files and what-not that I've created. Currently the only really active part of the website is the listing of used boardgames I have for sale.
Marketplace
I'm a confirmed thrift store junkie and I specifically keep an eye out for used boardgames and puzzles. Very often these games are incomplete and so I usually keep a stash of games I'm trying to complete or parts I'm offering for sale.
Sumo/Counter Game Index
Sumo was a small magazine about boardgames published by Mike Siggins from 1989-1998. When it ceased publication Stuart Dagger, Alan How and Mike Clifford continued the tradition with Counter magazine which runs to this day. With many reviews and much discussion about games, the back issues contain a wealth of information but it's often difficult to find what you're looking for (particularly for Sumo which contained no index). The following pages list every game that has received mention in the pages of Sumo or Counter magazines along with the relevant issues and page numbers, hopefully this will help.
Counter Articles
These are all the articles I've written for Counter magazine. They originally appeared in the issues indicated.
- My First Gathering of Friends
- Disturbing Themes
- Random Factors in Gaming
- News & Views from The Gathering
- Competition in Gaming
- Simulation vs. Mechanics in Gaming
- The Best of Times?
- The Gathering of Friends XI
- Reviewing Games
Miscellania
I really enjoy creating player aids for boardgames and I've listed most of my better ones below. Many of these files were originally created with Corel 8.0. E-mail me if you'd prefer them in this format. In fact, feel free to e-mail me if you'd like any of these files in a different format, I'd be only too happy to oblige.
- Adel Verpflichtet - (By Hook or By Crook) A flow chart turn summary. I've found this makes explaining the game to new players much easier. (~87Kb)
- Adel Verpflichtet - Card graphics for a sixth player. (~560 Kb) (If you want a set with a different border colour, e-mail me.)
- Adel Verpflichtet - 9 additional auction items for use when playing with 6 players. (~260Kb)
- Adel Verpflichtet - A replacement jail cell for six players. (~144Kb)
- Alaska - Event card description summary. (~207Kb)
- Axis & Allies: Pacific - Setup chart for Japan with errata incorporated. (~155Kb, e-mail for large version, ~4.0 Mb)
- Babel - Fancy Babel rules summary. (~327Kb)
- Auf Achse - Truck cards to indicate player colour as well as coloured chits to mark the origin and destination of the four public contracts. (~60Kb)
- Clippers - Replacement Departure Cards that show the map with the starting ports labeled. One for each country: France, Germany, Japan, UK, USA. (~640Kb each)
- Colorado County - Scoring Chart Summary translation. These are formatted to be printed on Avery disk labels and afixed to the player screens. (Word 97 format.)
- Die Glucksritter - English cards for Die Glucksritter in Corel 8.0 format. (~350 Kb)
- Don Pepe - English card reference for Don Pepe. (~324Kb)
- Entdecker - English version of events chart. (~185Kb, e-mail for large version ~2.5 Mb)
- Evo - Score chart for Evo. You can actually fit pieces on it! (~218Kb, e-mail for large version ~5.0 Mb!)
- Flinke Pinke - (Further evidence I have too much time on my hands.) Translation (based on Chris Mellor's original) that duplicates the formatting of the original booklet. Print it out double sided, fold and trim and tadah! (Word97 format.)
- Igel Argern - Dice cards for use with variant #7. (The artwork is from Pico, thanks to Doris & Frank for allowing me to use it. ~80Kb)
- La Citta - Two files - a Food Track (1.2 Mb) and Tokens (133 Kb). These can be used as an alternate method of tracking each players total food production and population. Makes it much easier to see when you're going to run out of food.
- Loopin' Louie - Chicken Disk replacement graphic (~39Kb) Original Corel file also available.
- Marracash - Translated summary chart. (~132Kb)
- New World - Turn Chart. Unlike the original this one is actually visible to the naked eye. (Word 97 format.)
- RoboRally - A couple of files - replacement Virtual Robots (in color with arrows, ~213Kb) and Player Indicator Markers (~266Kb). These are based on the first edition robots. Probably not quite as useful unless you've painted the robots in the same scheme that I have but better than the originals I think.
- Schotten-Totten - A hand ordering summary. (~88Kb)
- Stephenson's Rocket - A Scoring Summary sheet for Stephenson's Rocket. (~108Kb)
- Swashbuckler - Replacement carpet graphic. The original is just so plain! (~67Kb)
- T-Rex - I've reformatted the rules so that if you print out this Word97 document double sided, fold it in half and trim the page it fits nice and neatly in the box. (I HATED having the rules on those cards!)
- Vino - A Scoring Chart for Vino. (~145Kb)
- Volldampf - Fancy quick setup sheet. This is from Stan Hilinski's original. (~183Kb)
