Taxman 2004

Thousands of Canadians can't be all wrong! Try it out!

Special Download Options:
If you have already installed Taxman 2002 or Taxman 2003 (which means you have a C:\Program Files\Common Files\Taxman folder full of stuff), then you only need:

Taxman 2004 Upgrade Version 1.3 (04setup3.exe, 1.9 MB)
This should be the final version for 2004 and all known bugs as of April 16, 2005 have been fixed (Inch'Allah). After downloading, just double-click 04setup3.exe to install. If you are installing Version 1.3 on top of Version 1.0 see below at 'Bugs and Problems'.

        Download Upgrade Now

Otherwise you must get the full program:

Taxman 2004 Full Version 1.1 (04txm11.zip, 9.2 MB)
After downloading, you then unzip 04txm11.zip and double-click setup.exe to install.

New Features:

  • Need spouse's net income? Just double-click! Net income is now saved every time you leave a tax return. Now there's no need to go search through the spouse's return, Taxman will take the trip for you.
  • CCA/ECA revamped! Provided you didn't use Override last year, Taxman can now dump in the Start-of-Year CCA/ECA balance. This means that by just pressing {F12} and double-clicking, CCA/ECA will fill itself out.
  • Plus more! Responding to your emails, there's been a hundred little tweaks. Now Taxman is even more moron-simple, and may well purr as close to perfection as is humanly possible.

Taxman 2004 Bugs and Problems:

Sometimes the Schedule 3 capital gains and losses are not showing up on T1KS page 1. Before printing, check T1KS page 1 for Schedule 3 values. This problem may have occurred in previous Taxman programs: double-check that your latest Notice of Assessment correctly states any unused capital losses.

The Caregiver amount isn't making it onto the provincial tax form. Use {F5} to override Line 5840 or upgrade to Version 1.3 to cure this ill.

In Version 1.0 the provincial foreign tax credit hadn't been updated and Northwest Territories' T1-General Page 1 was wrong. If you install Version 1.1 or 1.2 over top of Version 1.0 (look in either Readup04.txt or Readme04.txt to find the version number), 04tables.mdb won't be replaced but it has to be replaced. The solution is to first rename Version 1.0 04tables.mdb to old04.mdb, then install the upgrade. When you start Taxman you will have a new empty 04tables.mdb into which you can copy all your old data by clicking Tools\Data Transfer\Get All and then locating old04.mdb for the program.

I tend to forget all the hidden control tips, so if your mouse sits over Lines 120 or 121 a control tip opens to show the 2003 exchange rates. The 2004 rates will show if your mouse is over the memory control on the calculator.

If you have more than one business, farm or rental property then pressing {F12} may not find the right business, farm or rental.

Version 1.3 solves all the above bugs.

Warnings:

If a CPP T4A Effective Date refers to a prior year, then on Worksheet enter "1" as the Effective Date. This will tell Taxman that CPP was payable in January of the tax year and that you are therefore exempt from paying into CPP.

When in the GST Credit Yes/No boxes, the GST Credit limits are shown below-left on the status bar. These limits are only a rough guide, don't let them prevent you from claiming the GST Credit. Make the government check that you are not eligible for the credit.

Remember you can change tax returns back to 1995. Just write a letter begging under CRA's Fairness Initiative, and explain what you want done.
